Create an Instagram Bio that Bangs – Caitlin Bacher Style!

Create an Instagram Bio that bangs Caitlin Bacher Style

I watched an awesome webinar this morning presented by Caitlin Bacher about how to totally rock the shiz out of your Instagram account and I wanted to share the brilliant tips she taught about creating a bio that bangs (rather than one that blows, wipes, sucks or bites the big one).

Here goes…

Grab your phone (if it’s not permanently attached to your hand already) and open up Instagram.

Imagine you’re anyone but yourself and read your bio.

How do you feel?

Are you chomping at the bit to learn more?

Have you had that rush of “YEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS! I’m so glad I found you. I NEED you, you awesome solution to my problem you!”?

Are you ready to sign up, stalk yourself or pay yourself metric butt-loads of money based on your bio?

Ahhhhh, maybe not.

If your bio is blending into a pool of same-samey-ness and it’s as clear as mud what you do, it’s time to up your Insta-game.

Caitlin says:

A good bio will stop someone in their tracks.

Yep, that’s right.

A good bio is like a punch in the face – you weren’t expecting it and it stopped you in your tracks (though unlike a punch in the face, a good bio won’t leave you with a black eye).

So here’s Caitlin’s recipe for a rockin’ bio that’ll bring more of your right people your way and have them begging for more.

Let’s start with Caitlin’s IG bio and we’ll break it down step by step.

Pretty cool huh?

Here’s the step by step breakdown.

ONE :: Start with an Attention Grabbing Pain Point

Tell your reader EXACTLY what you’re helping them with. What is it they want to do, be, have or achieve?

What’s that elusive goal they’re trying to rock?

What’s the SOLUTION they really want and need that you can offer.

Caitlin’s tip here is that pain points usually fall into one of three categories and people either want:

  • More time
  • More money or
  • More freedom

And if you’re not sure what pain point you help solve for your clients then ask them! Send a survey to your mailing list and ask them “What is your number one struggle right now?” {Note – don’t go into every Facebook group you’re in and ask this, they’re not REALLY your audience and also, it’s kind of icky because people do it ALL. THE. TIME.}

When you’re speaking to your ideal client’s pain point, keep it positive.

Think of it this way, if Caitlin’s bio said “Do you suck at Instagram and have no followers? Sign up for my free course” how’s that going to make you feel? Pretty crappy about yourself, right? So when you’re talking with your peeps, keep it upbeat.

TWO :: Make it Relatable

Have some fun, share a fun fact and give people something to relate to.

For me it’s pyjamas (or trackies/sweatpants depending on where you’re from), chocolate, couch time, 80s pop + dance music and owning my dork-dom.

In Caitlin’s bio her relatable hook is eating treats and watching TV (Netflix and gummi worms).

It’s awesome for a few reasons.

First up, it shows you’re human.

Second, it offers up the “me too” factor.

Third, it helps you connect with the people you really want to connect with – YOUR audience. Because if you talk about loving working in your PJs, or from the couch, or loving Netflix and the person reading that doesn’t relate, then they’re not your people!

So sharing a little something means you’re putting your awesome personality out there and also making it crystal clear that you’re not for everyone (and that’s awesome too).

THREE :: Call to Action

The final step is to let people know EXACTLY what action you want them to take.

Give them one, single action to take, make it super clear and (preferably) make what you’re offering free (because offering freaking amazing value for free is a great place to start building a new relationship – it’s all part of that know, like and trust factor all the biz bosses talk about).

The Banging Bio Recipe in Action

You can’t access a recipe like that and not sample the goods. So, inspired by Caitlin, I’ve taken the Banging Bio Challenge (I just made that up) and revamped my Instagram bio.

Here’s the snooze-worthy, cookie cutter, lame-o bio I had pre-webinar (thank goodness for phone screenshots – I got so excited about updating my bio I forgot to take a screen grab first!).

Aaaand, here’s my bangin’ new bio (that’s already brought new people to my mailing list. Boo-yah!).

Ok grammers, now it’s your turn to take the Instagram Banging Bio Challenge!

Here’s how:

  1. Screenshot or write down your existing bio (so we’ve got something to compare to later).
  2. Read your bio.
  3. Is it rocking? Awesome, keep it and continue your reign as grammer supreme.
  4. Is it ready for some rocking? Sweet! Follow the rocking bio recipe above and re-write your bio.
  5. Read your new bio and congratulate yourself on the supremely fine work.
  6. Update your bio on Instagram so the world can revel in your awesomeness.
  7. Share your old bio and your new bio in the comments so we can all celebrate and high five each other.
  8. Use the hashtag #RockYourGoals on your latest IG post so I can check our your Instagram account and celebrate you there too!

Now go forth and be awesome!

    This is spot on Sarah! Yes it’s absolutely all about the copy. I initially went with the minimal copy/summary trend for a while then finally tweaked my bio copy into how I serve my clients. I’m obsessed with your Instagram feed btw 😉

    I loved this webinar! When Caitlin talked about your audience wanting more time/more money/more freedom, I was like “duh! I can’t believe I never thought about this!”. Now, I’d love your feedback:
