5 Lessons from the Biz Boss Adelaide Masterclass

Biz Boss Masterclass

I spent an amazing day Saturday with blog legend Jaclyn Carlson from Blog Society, branding and business maven Mary Bills from Amuse Creative and gorgeous designer and wild heart Emma Kate Codrington from Emma Kate Co at the Biz Boss Adelaide workshop.

These inspiring and successful women covered everything from business foundations, branding, marketing and how to stand out on Instagram. So I thought I’d share 5 great lessons from the day with you.

Know Your Why

You’ve heard me say this before, but knowing your WHY in business is so important.

Your “why” is the heart of your business, where everything you create comes from and it’s what keeps you going when the going gets tough.

Dig deep and find out your why by answering these questions:

  • Who or what inspired you to start your blog or business?
  • Why are you doing it? What’s your purpose and what impact do you want to have on others?

Get Really Clear About What You Want

It’s all well and good to say you want to be ‘successful’ or have ‘freedom’ in your business but what the heck does that actually mean?

You need to take the time to get really clear about what you want and what things like ‘success’ and ‘freedom’ mean to you.

Take time to sit with your vision. Decide how you want your business to make you feel and then get really, really clear on what that looks like.

  • Does it mean working from your favourite café?
  • Does it mean 6 weeks holidays on a beach in Fiji every year?
  • Does it mean having the flexibility for afternoon yoga, picking your kids up from school or being able to afford a cleaner?

When you know exactly what you want, and more importantly what that looks like, it’s a whole lot easier to make it happen and means you’ll be able to recognise it when you get there.

Make A Plan

Jaclyn called it the 90 day “get shit done” plan and the key is to simplify.

Yes you have 100 ideas and you want to do them all now (don’t we all) but if you want to get stuff done, pick 3 goals, focus only on those 3 and do them really, really well for 3 months.

Set those 3 goals, break them down into bite sized pieces and make sure you’re taking daily (or at least weekly) action towards making that awesome stuff happen.

Charge What You’re Worth

Mary covered this topic like a boss and the bottom line is, stop selling yourself short, grow a pair and charge what you’re worth. No self-doubt, no second guessing yourself and no cutting yourself own. No discounts, no half priced deals because you think people won’t pay you full price and no adding on loads of extras without renegotiating terms.

Let me be clear on this:

You are good enough and you deserve to be paid well for what you do.

Figure out how much you need/want to earn in a year. Make sure that figure will cover your bills and business expenses + leave room for some luxuries. Divide that total figure by the number of hours you have available for chargeable work and voila, there’s your hourly rate.

If the figure scares you or your brain goes into instant panic mode, find a friend and practise saying how much you charge. Keep practising until you feel comfortable.

If you need further convincing watch this Denise Duffield Thomas video about how men sell versus how women sell. It’s hilarious and so true.

Brand Your Biz Like A Boss

Hands up if you think branding is scary.

Well it doesn’t have to be.

When you break it down to basics, branding is all about sharing your story.

It’s the feelings, information and experience people take away from every interaction with you or your business, whether it’s in a blog post, on social media or in person. It’s your voice, your tone, the colours, fonts and pictures you use.

They all come together to create your brand and the idea is to create a brand that connects with your right people.

A couple of really key things to remember here:

  • You can’t be all things to all people; and
  • Be yourself

Also, while it’s great to look at other websites, Pinterest boards and social media feeds for inspiration it all comes down to being YOU, because no one else has your story, your insights or shares things quite the same way as you. Embrace that because that’s your point of difference. Let your audience get to know you and let your own uniqueness shine through in your branding.

Need more help with this? If you’re putting together your branding or you’re not sure where to start, ask yourself these questions:

  • What 3 words best describe your business?
  • Does your current branding match those words?
  • What do you want your blog/business to be known for?
  • Who are your right people – who are you trying to attract to your blog/business?

Amazing article and so helpful! I love the picking three goals to focus on for three months, I may have to implement that since I have about a zillion things and try too hard to do them all at the same time. Also, the knowing your why is definitely important, sometimes we lose sight of why we started so knowing your “why” from the get go can help you go back and remember that this is why you started and what you are trying to accomplish. Thanks for this 🙂

Oh I hear you Heather! I’m a ‘million ideas all at once’ kinda gal too and it can be fun but REALLY unproductive. 🙂 The 3 goals tip works and it’s definitely helped me get more done.

I love the idea of setting three goals and doing my best at them for three months. Everything has been kind of crazy in my life lately, but that should help me find some focus. Thanks for sharing!

You’re welcome Brita. I love the 3 goals / choose 3 things plan. It seems so simple but it REALLY works. It also covers the best of both worlds – you get variety, but you know what you’re working towards! It rocks. 🙂
